Thinking Of A Career As A Driving Instructor?

Thinking Of A Career As A Driving Instructor?

Currently in the UK, there is a demand for driving instructors as there is more desire than ever to own a vehicle for personal mobility rather than having to rely on public transport. One thing that pursuing this career will bring you is job security, as there will always be someone who wants to learn how to drive. With the theory and hazard perception tests as well as the practical elements of driving, there will always be a demand for high quality instructors.

As a driving instructor you will need to be willing to work flexible hours including early mornings, late nights and weekends. Most of your time will be spent teaching your students how to drive safely, the highway code and the knowledge they will need to pass the theory test, while preparing them for the hazard perception test and final practical test.

Every student will be different; some will learn quicker than others, and it will be your responsibility to focus on giving your students specific lessons to target their weak areas as well as assess their overall driving abilities.

Your initial training requires you to pass three tests:

  • A computer based theory and hazard perception test.
  • A practical test of your driving ability.
  • A practical test of your ability to instruct.

Once this training phase is complete then you can start working as a driving instructor but your career is just getting started. You also have the option to move into other areas of driving tuition including providing instruction for driving fleets and emergency services or moving into specialised areas of instructing like larger goods vehicles, buses and other passenger carrying vehicles.

There are significant benefits to being a driving instructor including:

Being your own boss and finding job satisfaction

You’ll be responsible for your own income and if you’re stuck in a job where you feel you have no room to manoeuvre, then a job as a driving instructor may be just the career for you. Having your own business and watching your hard work pay off will be great, but it won’t compare to the satisfaction you will gain from seeing your students pass their tests and become independent drivers.

Flexible hours and holidays

Most driving instructors will work around 20-30 hours a week but they work any hours they choose. Remember if you want to be an instructor then you will need to be available for your students and some of them may want to experience night driving, early mornings or weekend driving to get a feel for the roads at different times of the day. You create your own calendar and book your students in to suit your availability and convenience. Being a driving instructor also means that you can take a holiday whenever you need to, providing you have the financial capacity to do so as you won’t get any money for the day you don’t work and you will need to make sure you let your students know well in advance.

Freedom and fun

With a job as a driving instructor you are not confining yourself to an office; you can go anywhere and find new places and areas to explore. You will also get the chance to meet new people and although teaching someone to drive is a serious business, there’s no reason why you can’t keep your lessons fun, informative and memorable. You will help your students feel at ease and help them to build their knowledge, understanding and the practical skills they need to become competent and confident drivers.

Being a driving instructor requires commitment, and you will spend the initial stages putting a lot of effort into growing your client base and reputation. Yet with the right frame of mind, hard work and a determined attitude, you will succeed.
